A HOST of big name stars and 50,000 music fans will descend on Glasgow Green when Radio 1’s Big Weekend comes to the city. 

The two day event will be held on May 24 and 25, it was announced this morning.
Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw revealed the news live on air as he presented his show from the BBC Scotland headquarters at Pacific Quay.
Live guests on the show included Paisley singer songwriter Paulo Nutini and pop star Rita Ora who were are the first acts on the festival line up to be announced.
Both spoke of their excitement at playing at the Glasgow event.
An audience of 30 pupils from St Mungo’s Academy in Glasgow cheered and shouted as details about the Big Weekend were revealed.
One schoolboy was the envy of his class when he scored a kiss from Rita Ora.
Sixth year pupil Sean Bommer, 17, proudly showed off a red lipstick mark on his left cheek.
He told the Evening Times: “I am not sure I want to wash my cheek but my girlfriend will not be too happy about that.”
Pipe rock band the Red Hot Chilli Pipers also played live on the show from the Clydeside studio along with local up and coming band Baby Strange who have been tipped for success by Radio 1.
The band will also be performing at the Big Weekend in May.
The full line up will be announced in the coming months but Radio 1 have promised a big name music stars.
Previous headliners include Lady Gaga and the Foo Fighters.
Radio 1’s Big Weekend, the biggest free music festival in the UK, is now in its 11th year.
This years event has been organised in partnership with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau to celebrate Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Radio 1 are also planning to host a night celebrating dance music in the city on Friday, May 23.
In the lead up to the Big Weekend, Radio 1 and BBC Learning will also host events across the city from May 10 to 16.
Nick Grimshaw said: “So excited to announce that we are going to be partying in Glasgow this summer.
“there is a rule that the further north you go, the more fun ye gig will be so I am so psyched to be I Scotland this year.
“ Big Weekend always has the best line up and kicking things off this year are Rita and Paolo. I can’t wait.”
Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of the city’s marketing bureau, said: “As part of Glasgow’s major events strategy it has been our ambition to attract Radio 1’ Big Weekend and I am delighted that the BBC has accepted the city’s invitation.
“Radio 1’s Big Weekend will set the scene for I unforgettable summer in Glasgow and bring some of the worlds top performers to our city.”
Jason Carter, head of live music events said: “Radio 1’s Big Weekend is the biggest event in the station’s calendar and we are delighted that Glasgow will host the event for the first time in 2014.
“It is shaping up to be a stunning artist line-up, and the city will no doubt be buzzing across the weekend.”
