One of the top athletics competitions in the world will be held in Glasgow this summer just days ahead the Commonwealth Games.

British Athletics has confirmed the London leg of the 2014 IAAF Diamond League will take place at Hampden on July 11 and 12.

The event will become known as the Sainsbury's Glasgow Grand Prix and will be supported by Sainsbury's, Event Scotland and Glasgow City Council..

Tara Hewitt, head of sponsorship at Sainsbury's, said: "We are delighted the 2014 IAAF Diamond League is coming to Glasgow and will be known as the Sainsbury's Glasgow Grand Prix.

"Just last month at the Sainsbury's Glasgow International Match we saw the passion of the Scottish crowd and their enthusiasm for athletics and look forward to seeing this again in the summer."

City council leader Gordon Matheson said hosting the sporting event was another huge honour for the city which hosts the Commonwealth Games from July 23.

He added: "Some of the biggest names in world sport will compete in the city during the Year of Glasgow and we are looking forward to warmly welcoming them all, starting at the Diamond League meeting.

"Our reputation as one of the world's top sporting cities continues to goes from strength to strength by staging prestigious events such as this."
