GLASGOW'S most famous shopping street is set to become the backdrop for a new reality TV show.

Sauchiehall Street will provide the setting for a new BBC documentary, featuring the characters who make the street unique.

The Street, to air on Monday, will see shop and bar workers turned into stars.

Shown in three parts, the programme films Sauchiehall Street by day, when thousands are employed in its shops, restaurants and bars.

By night, the street attracts hordes of visitors to sample its buzzing nightlife.

A BBC Scotland spokeswoman said: "Sauchiehall Street is known to many people daytime and night-time and the Sauchiehall Street reflected in the series is the one that many people - across Scotland and not just in Glasgow - will recognise, but the core of the series is the stories of those featured, largely working people in shops and bars and the street pastors who help the homeless and revellers at night.

"This series is very much a portrait of a modern retail street and the stories of people who are part of that pulse of the city."

Documentary makers said they have tracked down Sauchiehall Street's biggest characters - from taxi drivers to business owners.

Produced by Friel Kean Films, the series highlights the stories of a number of people whose daily lives are intertwined with the one-and-a-half-mile street.

They range from shopkeepers and buskers, to revellers, street pastors, bar workers, and caterers.

Main characters will include Savoy Centre manager Jim and his assistant Neil, as they try to introduce Sunday opening to the centre, and restaurateur Nick, specialising in lunchtime takeaways for shoppers and office workers.

The cameras also follow Margaret and Brodie, as they lead troops of street pastors to provide help to the homeless and party-goers.

Bar manager Lee is also filmed discussing getting a new outlet established amid a welter of competition.

Taxi marshalls at the rank outside the street's main nightclubs are shown giving advice to revellers in the first hour-long programme airing on BBC1 at 10.35pm on Monday.
