CAR crime has rocketed around Ibrox as thieves target football fans.

Footie fans -both Rangers and away supporters - parking around the stadium on match days have been target by thieves.

Streets around Ibrox Stadium have seen sharp increases in the number of cars being broken into.

Police have now launched high-visibility patrols - including on match days - around crime hotspots and popular parking areas.

Officers confirmed thieves are targeting cars parked in the area on match days.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Officers are aware of the incidents and extra resources have been deployed.

"Enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible."

Match days mean rich pickings for criminals, with hundreds of extra vehicles parked in the area.

As reported in the Evening Times, extra police patrols have been stepped up to combat the increase in car break-ins.

The police beat covering Plantation Park, Springfield Quay, Tradeston and Bellahouston, has also been bearing the brunt of car crime.

Vehicle windows have been being smashed and doors forced by thieves who then steal valuable items from inside the car.

Broomloan Road, and part of Edmiston Drive, are among the streets popular for parking on match days.

Mobile phones, satnavs, laptops, mobile chargers and other personal belongings are being stolen.

Thefts are also taking place during weekdays between 10am and 6pm.

Inspector John Haynes, said: "When parking, car owners should ensure all valuables are removed from the vehicle or, at the very least, hidden from sight.

"Park in a populated area where there are more people and vehicles passing and in areas with good lighting and CCTV cameras nearby.

"These simple actions should help stop a thief from targeting your vehicle."

Police urged anyone to report suspicious activity surrounding vehicle crime to officers on 101.
