An escaped snake has been found in a Cathcart flat.

The Scottish SPCA was called to rescue the young cornsnake when a resident of Cartside Street found the snake in his bathroom last Wednesday night.

The exotic creature is now being cared for at the Scottish SPCA's Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre at Cardonald, where he has been named Riddell.

Stephanie McCrossan, animal rescue officer, said: "Riddell was not best pleased at being discovered and displayed a rather grumpy attitude at first.

"However, he's settled down well in our care and we're now appealing for his owner to come forward.

"We are regularly called out to rescue escaped snakes, particularly corn snakes as they are a very popular pet who seem to be excellent at breaking out of their vivariums.

"Even the smallest gap or hole can present an easy escape route for a corn snake and we'd urge all owners to ensure that their snake enclosures are well maintained and secure to prevent such mishaps.

"We believe Riddell may belong to someone nearby, possibly in an adjoining building.

"Ideally we'll be able to reunite him with his owner, but if no-one comes forward then we'll find him a loving new home."

Anyone who recognises Riddell is being asked to call the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
