HUNGRY youngsters were served a meal fit for a king as they marked a six million milestone.

Silver service was given to pupils from Lourdes Primary as workers from Cordia served up their six millionth school meal in Glasgow.

Scotland's largest supplier of school meals, Cordia Services, has been feeding city schoolkids since 2009.

And yesterday they enjoyed Scotch Broth as a starter, chicken and rice, with crusty bread for the main dish and jelly for dessert.

Cordia's head of facilities management, Julia McCreadie, said: "It is a tremendous feat for the entire team to reach this impressive figure and I'd like to extend my gratitude to each team member for their hard work over the last four years.

"We continually strive to bring new ideas to the table, boosting up-take and creating even more offering in school dining areas.

"Our rewards scheme is also an exciting way for children to enjoy healthy meals and have proven to be rather popular with young people, with great feedback about the incentives on offer.

"We will continue to implement novel approaches to catering in schools across the city and ensure that our offering is always both attractive and nutritional."

Cordia, an arms-length organisation of Glasgow City Council, works with the city's education department to deliver its school meal's strategy."

Cordia provides school catering in all of Glasgow's 136 primary and 30 secondary schools.

The company prepares all of its food in line with legislation from the Scottish Executive's Hungry for Success report and serves 30,000 school meals per day.

They have rolled out a number of innovative ideas in school catering areas across the city, including Fuel Zones, cafes and even an art gallery where young people enjoy healthy food while admiring the creative talents of their peers.

Cordia also runs an incentive-based healthy eating initiative in secondary schools, rewarding pupils who choose options such as fruit and vegetables at lunchtime with prizes such as gym memberships and iPod Shuffles.

To date, Cordia has given out more than 10,000 vouchers, tickets and electronic items.

Councillor Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People, added: "That's a lot of school meals and every one a healthy option!

"Congratulations to all and we will continue to encourage our young people to make healthy choices in life."
