STUDENTS from Glasgow University have taken on a fashion challenge to raise money for vulnerable women.

One Dress, One Month will see eight members of the university's Student Representative Council (SRC) wear the same outfits for 28 days.

But while the challenge is about fashion, the fundraising initiative has a serious message.

They aim to raise cash for Glasgow Women's Aid (GWA), which runs refuges across the city for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Breffni O'Connor, vice president of student activities, has organised the event and is urging other students to join in.

The 24-year-old said: "The SRC has supported Women's Aid for a number of years now as it is a local charity doing really important work across the city.

"We were particularly impressed by the work that the charity does with children and young people."

One Dress, One Month takes place throughout February and sees women do exactly that - wear one dress for the full month.

The aim of the scheme is to help raise funds through the challenge of wearing the same clothes for 28 days.

Breffni added: "A big draw for us was the chance to talk to other students about GWA and tell them about the work happening in the refuges.

"We want to raise funds, but it's important to raise awareness and let as many people as possible know about GWA.

"It really starts to attract attention when you've been wearing the same clothes for a full week - but we should point out we wash the dresses at night."

Angela Devine, manager of the charity, said: "We are really grateful to the women from the Student Representative Council for raising money and awareness for Glasgow Women's Aid.

"Our organisation has been helping women, children and young people across the city for the past 40 years, giving information, support and refuge accommodation to those who are experiencing domestic abuse.

"We rely on donations to make sure that we can continue to support the 5000 women and their children who contact us on a yearly basis so thank you, once again, to Breffni for organising the One Month, One Dress event."
