TENNIS superstar Andy Murray was crowned Sports Person of the Year at a glamorous awards ceremony.

Mum Judy Murray collected the gong on behalf of her son at the celebrations at Glasgow City Chambers.

The Olympic gold medallist and Wimbledon champ-ion was one of 13 sports people, self-less volunteers and dedicated coaches to be presented with accolades.

Among them was wheelchair athlete Samantha Kinghorn, who took home the Evening Times Disabled Athlete of the Year Award, karate kid James Coulter, who took home the Evening Times Young Sportsperson of the Year and Andy Griffiths, the winner of the Evening Times Volunteer of the Year Award.

Samantha was one of the first to qualify for a place on Team Scotland ahead of the Commonwealth Games this summer.

The teenager will compete in the T54 1500m in Hampden Stadium during the sporting extravaganza and has her long-term sights set on Rio 2016.

Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson and Lord Provost Sadie Docherty announced the winners at the prestigious event last night.

Archie Graham, chair-man of Glasgow Life and executive member for the Commonwealth Games, said: "Congratulations to all of our award winners and indeed every individual, club and school that received a nomination.

"They are all a true inspiration.

"Glasgow is continually building on its reputation as one of the world's top sporting cities, and I'm proud that we are also consistently producing so many talented athletes."
