A CITY college is launching a new radio station for its 27,000 students.

Glasgow Clyde Radio, which begins broadcasting tomorrow, will be run by students and staff at Glasgow Clyde College.

The radio station, which is based at the Cardonald campus, will feature a variety of programme formats, including politics and current affairs, music and entertainment.

It is being run in partnership with Radio Clyde and will broadcast four hours of student content each day.

The launch of the new station will feature an interview with college principal Susan Walsh, and Education Secretary Mike Russell will join the One O'Clock Show for a live chat.

HND media and communications student William Candish won the competition to name the new venture.

He said: "As a media student, I am excited about the launch of the station. I am going to be interviewing college principal Susan Walsh for a pre-recorded show which will be broadcast on launch day."

The station logo was designed by HND practical journalism student Catrina Cochrane who is a keen web designer.

She said: "I came across the competition on the student intranet and thought I would give it a go.

"It has been great to see my logo around the college campuses and as a journalism student I am excited about the opportunity to work on the station."

Radio graduate Katerina Pansera from Montreal, in Canada, is helping the students in the running of Glasgow Clyde Radio.

She said: "It is a really exciting project to be part of as the more practical broadcasting experience we give students, the more prepared they will be for jobs in the media once they graduate."

Alex McCluskey, the college's director of creative and cultural industries, welcomed the launch of the new radio station saying the college's journalism and media students would benefit hugely as a result.

He added: "The radio partnership with Bauer media is an excellent opportunity for our students to develop their broadcasting and technical skills in a professional environment."

Station founder, broadcaster Charles Fletcher, said: "We've only just begun to sense what Glasgow Clyde College can realise with its own radio station.

"GCR is a great platform with many possibilities for education, information and entertainment.

"We have news, music, drama and offer an exciting opportunity to do radio and to do it well."
