THE FIRST painting created by a famous Scottish artist will be auctioned for charity.

Peter Howson's Christ on The Cross, an oil painting created when he was six years old, will be sold at McTears Auctioneers in Glasgow on Sunday, March 9.

Half of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to cancer charity Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Experts predict the artwork could fetch several thousand pounds when it goes under the hammer, despite no reserve price being set.

Peter, now aged 55, said: "I remember quite clearly painting it.

"I do have an emotional connection to the picture but I wanted to do something for the charity and this seemed like the right thing to do."

The piece measures 35cm by 24cm and featured prominently in a retrospective of Peter's work in the city centre's McLellan Galleries.
