AN electronic messaging system that keeps inmates in touch with their families is being launched at HMP Kilmarnock.
The Ayrshire prison is the first in the UK to trial the system.
The emailaprisoner system replaces letters with a secure messaging system that enables friends, family and caseworkers to send messages to prisoners electronically.
Secure messages and responses will be sent via touch screen kiosks. The sender pays for all messages, so there is no cost to the taxpayer, and messages are vetted.
