ARMED Forces veterans at Erskine are getting a share of a £200,000 cash pot.

The money is being made available to help Scotland's veterans' charities and community museums commemorate the First World War.

The charity will share £9720, with two other projects in Ayr and Dundee.

Woodhill Primary School in Bishopbriggs will receive £414 for museum visits, to learn about citizenship, the sacrifices made by those in our Armed Forces and how the Home Front supported the war effort.

Caledonian University receives £6000 for employment training for Early Service Leavers, working in partnership with Glasgow's Helping Heroes, Glasgow City Council and others.

First Minister Alex Salmond, who made the funding announcement, said: "There are an estimated 400,000 ex-service men and women in Scotland who all have very specific needs and we must do all we can to cater for them.

"Our veterans deserve our support and assistance in return for their selfless service to the nation.

"Scotland, in common with so many other nations, suffered an appalling loss of life in the Great War and its effects on Scottish life were profound and long-lasting.

"It is essential we continue to commemorate all those who gave their lives."

Jim Wilson, of Veterans Scotland said: "The money will be used to support those people and organisations that are helping veterans."

Each week the Evening Times is recording the events and heroes of the First World War in the lead up to this year's centenary events.
