Top DJs will play to a crowd of 14,000 music fans to kick off Radio 1's Big Weekend in May, organisers said.

Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and others will take over Glasgow's George Square for the Friday curtain-raiser.

Paolo Nutini and Rita Ora have so far been confirmed to play the Big Weekend, an annual free music event hosted by the BBC.

More than 50,000 people are expected to watch their favourite acts at Glasgow Green on Saturday May 24 and Sunday May 25.

Tickets will be released for the DJ event this Friday at 7.45pm on a first come, first served basis.

Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac said: "Glasgow crowds are known the world over for being special in terms of the energy they bring.

"It's such an honour to start the weekend with my fellow Radio 1 DJs in the iconic George Square. We're going to bring some serious DJ names with us and it's going to be a night to remember."

Rhys Hughes, head of programmes at Radio 1 and 1Xtra said: "Some of the best DJ's in the world will be taking to the decks at George Square and will no doubt set the scene for what is going to be an amazing weekend of live music in Glasgow."

Tickets will be available online at Radio 1's website - www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/bigweekend - and by calling 0844 873 7350.
