PRIMARY school kids devoted a week to learning about the environment.

The Hillhead pupils are determined to secure a Green Flag Award and decided to show their commitment to all things eco.

From March 17 to 21 they took part in a community clean-up, created mini beast hotels and explored the local environment.

Teacher Lois Lurinksy, the school's eco-co-ordinator, said: "We decided to have an Eco Week to work towards our Green Flag - an international award recognising environmental efforts - and as a celebration of all things eco.

"Pupils from every class have really got involved in the event and made the most of the experience."

As well as exploring Kelvingrove Park with the Glasgow City Council Countryside Ranger Service, pupils held a wildlife feast in the playground.

They visited the Woodland Garden, in West Princes Street, to take part in biodiversity workshops and toured the Botanic Gardens.

Primaries four to seven worked with the recycling firm Re-claim to create wallets out of used Tetrapacks.

Hopscotch Theatre Company put on a play for the infant department, while the whole school took part in a community clean-up with officers from Glasgow City Council.

Kelvin Park Nursery pitched in with primary one pupils to clear out the school grounds.

Lois added: "The pupils enjoyed learning outdoors and learning about how to look after the plant, the environment and everything around them.

"It taught them about science in a real life context and it wasn't just pupils getting involved - we were really lucky to have a lot of support from parents too."
