SCOTLAND'S top bowls players gathered on the greens to cele-brate selection for the Common-wealth Games.

A total of 10 players were named at a special meeting at Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre, the sport's home during the competitions this summer.

Nine of the squad have already competed at previous Commonwealth Games, with a total of three gold medals between them.

Five men and five women make up the quota who will battle it out across the events but head coach David Gourlay is keeping the details a secret to maximise the team's tactical advantage.

Scotland has a long tradition of success in lawn bowls, winning 28 medals including 13 gold, and the team hopes to bag a podium finish this summer.

Among the players who made the team is Caroline Brown, from New Stevenson, North Lanarkshire.

The 33-year-old has been playing bowls since she was nine and competed in Delhi 2010.

She said: "It's an honour to be part of team Scotland and for it to be on our home patch just adds to that honour. It will be an amazing experience, and given it is in Glasgow, it will be fantastic."

World No.1 Singles champion Paul Foster, from Troon, in Ayrshire, and double Common-wealth gold medal winner Alex Marshall joined gold medallist Margaret Letham, from Bothwell, in Lanarkshire, who will compete at her fifth Commonwealth Games.

Lauren Baillie is the only one to make her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow.

Joining them are Darren Burnett, David Peacock, Neil Spiers, Claire Johnston and Lorraine Molloy.

Jon Doig, Team Scotland Chef de Mission, said: "This is an experienced team who between them hold multiple World and Common-wealth Games titles, and attendances at 18 Commonwealth Games."

The bowls squad is the first team announcement of 2014 and brings the total Team Scotland numbers selected so far to 46, with the final team size expected to be around 270 athletes.

David Gourlay, Bowls Scotland head coach, said: "I firmly believe the 10 players we have selected will give us our best opportunity to win medals."

Scotland will also enter athletes in the Para-Sport Lawn Bowls competition Mixed Pairs B2/B3 (visually impaired) and Open Triples B6/B7/B8 (physically impaired).
