GLASGOW 2014 unveiled the dress which will be worn by female Medal Bearers at the Commonwealth Games.

Designed by Glasgow-born Kerry Nixon, who is Keira Knightley's sister-in-law, it features the official Glasgow 2014 tartan printed onto the fabric by the Centre of Advanced Textiles at Glasgow School of Art.

With around 1.5 billion television viewers expected to tune in to watch the Games, the dress will take pride of place as the Medal Bearers carry the medals awarded to the athletes.

A closely guarded secret for many months, the dress was designed to reflect the youthful nature of the Games and to pay homage to Glasgow's art and fashion scene.

Games boss David Grevemberg said the design was everything organisers could have wanted.

Kerry, who attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, married Caleb Knightley in Pollokshields Burgh Hall in Glasgow a few years ago.

One of her bridesmaids was Caleb's film star sister Keira.

Kerry is well known for her love of Scottish textiles. Famous fans of her designer creations have included top actresses Gemma Arterton, Kirsten Dunst and Sienna Miller.

Mr Grevemberg, chief executive of Glasgow 2014, said: "Glasgow 2014 has been fortunate to work with Kerry Nixon, a globally acclaimed designer, on the design of the dresses to be worn by our female Medal Bearers.

"Kerry's creation is everything we could have wanted - stylish, contemporary and fun.

"Her use of The Official Glasgow 2014 Tartan and collaboration with the Scottish textile industry is consistent with our desire to showcase Scottish style."

Kerry's dress has been modelled by Brigid McGaw, Scottish Model of the Year in 2007, and the images were captured by celebrity photographer Nicole Nodland, who was the personal photographer to Prince and recently shot Lana Del Ray's album cover.

Kerry, who is also responsible for the styling of the male Medal Bearers which is yet to be revealed, said: "I'm delighted to be a part of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"It's a huge honour for me to design and now showcase the Medal Bearer's dress."
