THOUSANDS of local heroes will be told today they will carry the Queen's Baton on its way to the Commonwealth Games' opening ceremony.

Up to 100 baton bearers will carry the baton through their community on each day of the journey which will pass through Glasgow in the three days before the sporting extrav-aganza kicks off on July 23.

Its route will take in landmarks and attractions across the city starting at the People's Palace on Sunday, July 20.

It will stop at the Gallery of Modern Art, George Square, Glasgow Cathe-dral, the Mitchell Library, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Botanic Gardens and Finnieston Crane. At the end of each day thousands of people will be invited to finish-line events to be held in Springburn Park, Victoria Park, and Queen's Park recreation ground.

The baton, which is currently touring the Caribbean, will be carried by 4000 people from all 32 local authorities, visiting more than 400 communities over 40 days.

For the first time of any relay, all 545 secondary schools in Scotland were invited to nominate a pupil to participate as a baton bearer.

Community baton bearers have been selected by independent panels, who have considered their achievements against the odds, their mentoring of young people, contribu-tions to community and youth sport, and those who make a difference through volunteering and community support.

Today, people will be notified by email on whether their nominations have been successful.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "People Make Glasgow and people across both city and nation will today find out that they have been chosen to represent their communities by carrying, with pride and passion, the Queen's Baton.

"I have no doubt that the baton bearers will enjoy a fantastic reception from the people of Scotland as the relay continues towards its final destination, right here in Glasgow."
