Tickets for BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend 2014 Live from Glasgow Green were snapped up this morning in just over half an hour.

50,000 tickets were released at 8am during The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw.

The eagerly awaited tickets were given away in pairs, with 25,000 available for each day of the two-day event which takes place on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25.

The full line-up will be announced in April with Pharrell Williams, The 1975, Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini already added to the line-up for the two day event.

As with previous Big Weekends, tickets were geographically weighted with an element of preference given to local residents: 50 per cent of tickets were reserved for those living within the area covered by Glasgow City Council; 45 per cent were reserved for those residents in the rest of Scotland; with the remaining 5 per cent for other audiences across the UK.

On top of that, 14,000 tickets for BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend Live from George Square which kick-starts the weekend on Friday, May 23 May were all given away in an incredible 40 minutes.

The tickets were released on Friday, March 28, at 7.45pm and the lucky ticket-holders will be joining Radio 1 DJs Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Danny Howard and some of the world's biggest DJs at the iconic George Square for a massive party.

Jason Carter, Head of Live Music and Events, Popular Music, said: "Radio 1's Big Weekend is the network's flagship event and every year delivers a stunning artist line-up. The event's reputation is such that every year ticket demand is huge, we are not surprised that once again tickets have gone so quickly."

From Saturday, May 10 to Friday, May 16, Radio 1 and BBC Learning will open the doors to Radio 1's Academy, embarking on a special week of local engagement and outreach activity in Glasgow.

Further details about Radio 1's Academy, including the session plan and full line-up, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Radio 1's Big Weekend will be visiting Glasgow to celebrate the city's hosting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and will be produced in partnership with Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.

The event is part of the BBC's year-long contribution to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The BBC is the domestic broadcaster for Glasgow 2014 and, in addition to comprehensive sports coverage during The Games in July and August, the Corporation has also unveiled a wide-ranging package of on-air and off-air output and events throughout 2014.

BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend will be broadcast live on Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra and streamed online at bbc.co.uk/radio1/bigweekend and on mobile. It will also be broadcast on BBC Three with highlights from acts across the weekend.
