PLANE spotters are to be banned from parking on perimeter roads at Glasgow Airport on the day the world's biggest passenger aeroplane is to land.

Police will impose traffic restrictions after airport bosses were inundated with hundreds of phone calls, e-mails and social media messages from aviation enthusiasts ahead of the arrival of the "double decker" Airbus 380, which seats more than 500 passengers.

The A380, at almost 240ft in length and a wing span of 261ft, is the world's largest commercial aircraft and has never been to Scotland.

But Emirates Airlines has organised a one-off visit to celebrate 10 years of flights by the airline in and out of Glasgow Airport.

Thursday, April 10, is when the giant plane - which is fitted out with an on-board bar and a spa - is due to touch down at 12.35pm and take off three hours later.

However, plane spotters who drive to the airport have been warned no waiting or parking will be permitted on any of the airfield'sperimeter roads - Barnsford Road, Abbotsinch Road and Walkinshaw Road.

Illegally parked vehicles will be towed away. An airport spokesman said: "The airport has been working closely with Renfrewshire Council and Police Scotland to put various measures in place on the day.

"These will ensure the safety of visitors and minimise congestion on the airport's road network and surrounding roads.

"Viewing of the aircraft's arrival and departure will be limited to specific areas around the perimeter of the airfield.

"It is important that we manage the number of private vehicles travelling to the airport because parking will be limited."

Enthusiasts are being encouraged to use public transport.

A spokesman said: "Limited event parking will be available within the long stay car park in Arran Avenue. A shuttle bus service will operate from the long stay car park to the west side of the airfield and also to stance No 3 outside the main terminal building."

Airport bosses say plane spotters will be able to walk from the long stay car park and main terminal building to the viewing areas, while the short stay car parks will remain open as normal and can be pre-booked online at: www.glasgowairport.com

However, people are being urged to go online to http://www.glasgowairport.com/transport-and-directions to check out travel options for the event, which could attract thousands of spectators.
