THE panto season is about to get a whole lot better - oh, yes it is!

The King's Theatre in Glasgow is to stage an unusual performance of Peter Pan exclusively for people who have autism, learning difficulties or other sensory and commun-ication needs.

Billed as a "relaxed performance" it will be staged during the day on Wednesday January 7, with theatre bosses predicting the exper-ience will be "a first" for many in the audience.

Today's announce-ment was made by the King's creative learning manager and access champion Alison Cowan to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day.

She said: "I am thrilled to announce this unique perform-ance of Peter Pan which will be adapted with a more relaxed attitude to noise and moving around the auditorium.

"House lights will be kept on low and special effects softened to reduce anxiety however the panto won't lose its sparkle.

"This is a great way of offering a warm and inclusive welcome to people affected by autism or learning disabilities giving families, schools and groups the chance to experience high quality live theatre, often for the first time."

The city theatre already offers audio described, captioned and signed perform-ances but aims to extend access by intro-ducing new relaxed performances.

Those who book seats for the unique stage production in the New Year will be given a "visual story" before the show, which will be packed with details on what to expect, with help on how to prepare for the production.

The advance inform-ation will include photographs, a summ-ary of the plot, descrip-tions of each character and a note on audience participation which also explains the Peter Pan story.

A "familiarisation" visit to the King's can also be arranged with staff on hand to answer questions, while on the day there will be "chill out" areas for custom-ers to use any time dur-ing the performance.

These special areas -set up throughout the theatre - will be comfortable places to sit and relax. They will offer "quiet activities" and have staff and volunteers available.

Peter Pan runs from December 6 until January 11, 2015.
