RESTORATION work is to be carried out on Scottish war memorials to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The memorial at Glasgow School of Art is one of 10 to share £33,000 in grants following an announcement by the Scottish Government.

The cash boost will be used on essential restoration and conservation work. Repairs will also be done to the war memorial at Avendale Old Parish Church in Strathaven, South Lanarkshire.

Glasgow School of Art's memorial is to receive £1215 in funding while Strathaven has secured a grant of £1088. It was designed in 1925 by designed by a former student, Dorothy Doddrell.

Both form part of a £1 million allocation to communities across the country.

Scotland's Culture and External Affairs Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "The immense sacrifice of those Scottish men and women who died during the First World War and other conflicts should never be forgotten.

"These memorials, which serve not to celebrate war but to honour those who died, are a tangible reminder of our history and heritage and every effort should be made to maintain them for future generations. "

The grants are being distributed by the War Memorials Trust.

Trust director Frances Moreton said: "We are delighted to be administering the scheme on behalf of Historic Scotland and the Scottish Government and we encourage communities across Scotland to get in touch if they want to repair and conserve their war memorials."
