A GLASGOW cash and carry that supplies a range of foods to Asian restaurants and takeaways across Scotland has been bought up.

London-based competitor Bestway completed the takeover of Sher Bros Cash and Carry this week and is expected to boost non-food items by introducing the sale of alcohol, such as beer and spirits, to match the range offered by rivals.

The Sher business was acquired just months before it was due to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The takeover price has not been revealed, but will have been millions of pounds.

The cash and carry, based in Kilbirnie Street, Tradeston, employs 50 workers, but the new owners will not discuss future numbers until a detailed review of operations has been conducted.

The 200,000 square foot complex will trade under the name of Bestway Batleys Scotland.

The Bestway Group already operates seven other Batleys cash and carries north of the border. There is already a Batleys warehouse and depot in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire.

Younus Sheikh, Bestway's managing director, said: "The purchase of Sher will give the Batley brand a presence in the heart of the city, as well as the depot in Cambuslang, and our group's commitment to Batleys and Scotland."
