BEDDING that could save lives is to be given to people at risk from fires in the home.

Firefighters in Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven have been given cash by the West Dunbartonshire Home Safety Group to buy the flame-retardant bedding.

The scheme brings together the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) with West Dunbartonshire Council and Police Scotland.

SFRS area manager Paul Connelly said: "People who smoke in bed can all too easily start a potentially horrific fire that has tragic consequences.

"The reality is that lifestyle factors have a significant impact on the chance someone will experience a fire in the home - something that endangers not only themselves but also people within the wider community.

"Providing fire- retardant bedding to people who are identified as being at high risk will reduce the chance of fire striking in West Dunbartonshire and help save lives."

The West Dunbartonshire Home Safety Group decided to buy a supply of fire-retardant bedding after SFRS said it could save lives. As a result, firefighters conducting home fire safety visits can issue the resource to people who need it.

The free programme see firefighters identify risks and help residents take simple steps to address them.

Crews also ensure properties are protected by working smoke alarms and that everyone knows what to do if a fire does happen.

Among the advice to residents is never to smoke in bed or in a chair if feeling drowsy.

To arrange a free home fire safety visit, call SFRS on freephone number 0800 0731 999 or text "check" to 61611.

Visits can also be arranged through www.firescotland.gov.uk or with your community fire station.
