A school where a pupil was killed by a collapsing wall is to reopen after the Easter holidays following structural checks.

Keane Wallis-Bennett, 12, died at Edinburgh's Liberton High School when a modesty wall in the school's PE block collapsed on April 1.

Edinburgh City Council ordered urgent checks at schools across the city following the incident.

The schoolgirl's family described her as their "princess" and said she would be "sadly missed" by all her family and friends.

The council has written to parents to confirm that the school will reopen on Tuesday April 22 and explain the checks which have been carried out.

An independent firm of consulting structural engineers has carried out an internal inspection of the school building, which did not identify any structural concerns.

It said that work has been carried out on two ceilings in the teaching block "as a precaution" and will be concluded before pupils return.

A further external survey will be completed later this week.

The old gym will remain closed while police investigations continue.

In the letter, Gillian Tee, children and families director at Edinburgh City Council, wrote: "I would like to reassure you that I and my colleagues will be working closely with the head teacher and parent council to move forward following this tragic incident and that the safety of our pupils is our top priority."

She added: "Our intention is to work with the school community and parent council regarding long term plans for the gym."

The letter said that support from psychologists has been available for children and staff in the aftermath of the incident and will continue for as long as it is needed.

Keane's funeral will take place in Edinburgh tomorrow.
