MOURNERS today gathered to bid an emotional farewell to a schoolgirl killed when a wall collapsed on her.

Keane Wallis-Bennett, 12, died at Edinburgh's Liberton High School when a wall in the school's PE block gave way on April 1.

Her funeral took place at the city's Mortonhall Crematorium today and was attended by friends, family and classmates.

Mourners were asked to wear bright colours - some of Keane's pals wore onesies and pink sweatshirts with a picture of her and the message RIP Keane.

The coffin was carried in a white horse drawn carriage with her family and friend following close behind.

Following her death, the tragic schoolgirl's family described her as their "princess" and said she would be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

In a statement they said: "She dreamed of being prime minister. But failing that, a beautician.

"She loved her girlfriends and her days out shopping with lunches and all things girly.

"She recently attended her first under-18 disco and loved every second of it and was excited to be going to see One Direction in concert."

Head teacher Stephen Kelly described Keane as a "popular team player".

He said: "She showed a lot of sporting ability and was really eager to contribute to the school, for example, by clearing litter and planting bulbs in the school grounds.

"She had a real presence in class and her friends and my staff are deeply shocked and upset at what has happened.

"I am grateful for the support that our school community is receiving as we come to terms with this tragic event."

The school is to reopen after the Easter holidays but the gym will remain closed while police investigations continue.

Edinburgh City Council ordered urgent investig-ations at schools across the city following the incident.

An independent firm of consulting structural engineers carried out an internal inspection of the school building, which did not identify any structural concerns. It said that work has been carried out on two -ceilings in the teaching block "as a precaution" and will be concluded before pupils return.

A further external survey will be completed this week.

The council has written to parents to confirm that the school will open this Tuesday and explain the checks which have been carried out.
