PLAYERS of a team sport for disabled people who use power wheelchairs are celebrating four years of success.

Powerchair football kicked off in Glasgow in April 2010 at a pilot session involving just six players.

Thanks to support and funding from Glasgow Sport, it evolved into Clyde Powerchair FC - the country's first powerchair football club.

The club now has 30 members and five teams and has helped the SFA establish a national league.

Disabled people of all ages and abilities from across the country are now getting involved in the sport.

Recently, seven teams competed in the second annual powerchair Scottish Cup in Motherwell with Clyde Caledonia defeating Clyde Lions 1-0 in the final.

Stuart Aitchison and Kathleen MacKay, who are both disability sports workers, launched the powerchair football revolution in 2010 and are amazed at the growth of the sport.

Stuart said: "It is unbelievable to think we started with just a handful of kids at a taster session.

"The sport has come so far to be running a national league and a Scottish cup and we have interest from all over the country.

"We are proud that it all started in Glasgow, and without the support of Glasgow Sport, we wouldn't be anywhere close to where we are today."

Glasgow Sport helped the group find suitable venues with disabled access which allowed members to store equipment.

Powerchair football matches in Scotland take place over 30 minutes and involve four-a-side teams.
