DETECTIVES hunting three thugs who gang raped a woman today said they have had an "encouraging response" from the public.

Police launched a massive hunt for the three men who carried out the horrific assault in Glasgow's South Side.

Officers are following up several lines of inquiry after being contacted by the public.

The 33-year-old was dragged into a close and raped in Toryglen's Edinbeg Avenue.

Detective Chief Inspector Sharon MacGregor said: "We have received an encouraging response from the public and I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who contacted us.

"Detectives are now examining that information to establish if there are any new lines of inquiry which can be followed up."

Police said the attack happened after one man got out of a car, which was possibly a white or silver BMW, and forced the woman into a doorway.

Two other men - who the victim believes were also in the vehicle - then attacked her.

It happened between midnight and 3am on Saturday.

The gang made off and the victim managed to make her way home.

DCI MacGregor, from the public protection unit, added: "Officers are still in the process of gathering CCTV from in and around the area to study the footage.

"I would still like to appeal to anyone who may have any information or knowledge about the suspects or the incident to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency.

"A small piece of information can be significant so please do pass it on."

The three suspects are described as Asian and in their 20s. Anyone with any information is asked to call 101.
