POLICE made 18 arrests at Radio One's Big Weekend, which attracted huge crowds to Glasgow city centre at the weekend.

More than 50,000 people attended the main event in Glasgow Green with a further 15,000 squeezed into the George Square dance party.

The arrests were all for minor offences, including one for allegedly possessing drugs.

Police had made 15 arrests over the first two-days of the event, with eight people arrested at the event in George Square and seven on the first day in Glasgow Green.

All were classed as "minor offences" by Police Scotland and included an arrest for "public drinking".

On the final day of the festival police made three arrests including the drugs offence.

Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said he was proud of the attitude of the people in Glasgow during the festival.

He said: "More good music equals less crime. That's one of the lessons from BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow.

"I'm very proud of how well behaved the tens of thousands of revellers were over the weekend.

"In fact, there were fewer arrests in the city centre than on a normal Friday night."

The number of arrests at Glasgow's Big Weekend is significantly lower than Scotland's most famous festival T in the Park, which saw 91 arrests during its 2013 festival in Baldado, Kinross.

There was a large police presence throughout the weekend, with officers at the Glasgow Green entrance as well as placed throughout the park.

The Big Weekend welcomed several big name artists to George Square including Tiesto and Martin Garrix, with One Direction and Coldplay appearing in Glasgow Green.

The event was closed on Sunday night by pop-princess Katy Perry.
