RECORD breaking hotel occupancy in Glasgow is likely to continue until the Commonwealth Games.

A new report shows hotels in April were almost 83% full - the highest level since monthly record keeping began in 1999.

The figure is 6.7% up on the same period last year.

It is only the second time in the past 15 years that average occupancy in April has risen above 80%.

On seven nights last month, occupancy reached 93% or more, peaking at 98% on April 2 and April 12 which coincided with Gary Barlow's concert and the Dancing on Ice UK tour at the Hydro.

April was the eleventh consecutive month of record breaking occupancy rates for Glasgow hotels.

Sean Morgan, managing director of tourism market research specialists LJ Research said: "2014 is shaping up to be a record breaking year for Glasgow's hoteliers with occupancy levels and average room rate continuing to soar.

"These outcomes equate to double digit growth for hoteliers in the city again this month.

"High profile events at the SSE Hydro continue to play a key role in driving demand for accommodation in the city.

"A host of significant business and leisure events over the next few months will help in continuing the strong performance this year.

"Our forward booking reports support this notion and point towards ongoing growth in the remaining pre-Commonwealth Games phase."

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau believes April's visitor influx is down to a number of key events and conferences which took place during the month.

Council leader Gordon Matheson said the record breaking hotel occupancy rates reinforced the city's reputation as one of the world's must-visit destinations.

He added: "This is welcoming news for Glasgow hoteliers during the biggest year in the city's history and will give continued confidence to those breaking ground on new developments or with developments coming to fruition in the near future."
