NEW CCTV cameras will be installed after recent sex attacks left a community in shock.

Govanhill residents were left reeling after a 24-year-old woman was raped in Dixon Road on May 9 and in February a 26-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in nearby Dixon Avenue.

This week, we reported how a frail pensioner was also thrown against a wall by two women and robbed of £2000 in nearby Calder Street and recently Holyrood Secondary was rocked by a gang brawl on school grounds.

A stormy meeting held in the Larkfield Centre last week saw more than 60 people demand a police crackdown.

Councillor Soryia Siddique has now secured a commitment to install new high definition CCTV cameras from Community Safety Glasgow, the council's arms-length organisation which tackles crime.

She said: "There have been a lot of incidents in the area recently and I recognise the concern.

"I requested HD cameras be installed as a priority and I'm delighted Govanhill has now been selected for additional CCTV under the Future Cities project.

"The work is expected to be completed in the coming months."

The cameras' locations have not yet been decided but it is understood Victoria Road is one of the areas that will be covered.

The investment in surveillance was welcomed by campaigners who have called for action.

Clare Kelly, 29, who led last week's public meeting, said: "Govanhill has been getting steadily worse for the last six years.

"There's a new incident each week so I think more CCTV is excellent."

Hundreds of people are expected to take part in a midnight anti-crime march from Queen's Park on Monday night and Tuesday morning.

One of the organisers of 'These Streets Are Made For Walking', Ashley Crossan, 28, said: "More CCTV is what the community wants."

A spokeswoman from Community Safety Glasgow said: "We are in discussions regarding the requirements for the installation of CCTV into the Govanhill area. A decision will be made in due course."
