RECORD numbers of revellers flocked to Glasgow's West End as it hosted two of the city's biggest annual festivals.

More than 42,000 went to the Glasgow Mela on Saturday and Sunday for a music and dance extravaganza in Kelvingrove Park.

Meanwhile, Scotland's answer to Mardi Gras, part of the West End festival which opened last weekend, shimmied through Byres Road.

Organisers Glasgow Life last night said they were "blown away" by the fantastic turnout at the Mela and the positive feedback from visitors.

Councillor Soryia Siddique, chairwoman of Glasgow Mela's organising committee, said support for the event was "astonishing".

Liz Scobie, chair-woman of the West End Festival said: "What a weekend - Glasgow Mela has kicked off summer in style. It's been a fabulous opportunity to kick-start such a special summer for Glasgow and Scotland."
