SHOPPERS are creating a trolley-load of trouble for one of Glasgow's busiest shopping centres.

Trolleys from Silverburn are being dumped away from the shops and have even been found in Brock Burn at Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

Despite a weekend clear-up at the site, more trolleys from Marks and Spencers and Tesco were spotted cluttering the water shortly afterwards.

Store bosses claim shoppers take the trolley with them to save having to carry bags.

And some shoppers don't even seem to mind that they are losing the £1 they have to deposit to take Tesco and Marks and Spencer trolleys.

Once across the Muirshiel Crescent footbridge, which connects Silverburn and Brock Road, they throw their trolley into the river.

One shopper was spotted nearly half a mile away from the shopping centre with his Tesco bags still pushing it.

Ben Adams, who lives in the city centre, first noticed the problem when he was visiting his sister.

He said: "I counted nearly 200 dumped shopping trollies, when I was walking my dog. It is a disgrace and the companies should do something about it."

After the EveningTimes alerted them to the situation staff from the Tesco went to see the burn, and said not all the trollies were from their store. However, they estimated there were about 20 trolleys in the burn.

Tesco corporate affairs manager for Scotland Richard Holligan said his store would deal with the trolleys as quickly as possible. He said: "It's awful to hear that trolleys from our store have been dumped in the burn and I am glad this it has been brought to our attention. Colleagues at Silverburn Tesco were also very concerned.

"We will work together to get the burn cleared of these as soon as possible. We will take them away and will take immediate action."

A Marks and Spencer spokeswoman said: "We are aware of this issue and our facilities team is working hard to find a solution."

A spokeswoman for Silverburn said the trolleys are the responsibility of individual shops and declined to comment further.
