TWO football pitches are to be upgraded at a cost of more than £1million.

Around £600,000 will be spent replacing the pitch at Springburn Park and upgrading the pavilion.

At present, the pitch is closed because of its condition.

A report which will go before councillors next week states: "This proposal seeks to replace the existing carpet with a new, third generation football and rugby compliant carpet which will help to address the identified deficiencies in football provision in the north sector of the city."

Councillors will be told the pavilion in the park has suffered repeated leaks because of problems with the roof and guttering.

That has resulted in damage to 80% of the internal ceilings and walls. The report adds: "The building is in need of re-roofing and internal refurbishment to continue to offer a quality customer experience in support of pitch resurfacing and pavilion upgrade works at a total cost of £605,000."

Improvements will also be made at Glasgow Green football centre which will be closed to the public during the Commonwealth Games.

An existing full-size grass pitch will act as a plaza and holding area for spectators attending the hockey competition at the adjacent National Hockey Centre.

That will result in the grass pitch being out of commission until August next year.

As a result, the council plans to replace the grass surface with a new Fifa and International Rugby Board compliant third generation synthetic pitch at a cost of almost £430,000.

Glasgow Life chairman Archie Graham said: "The planned investment will bring the pitch at Springburn Park back to life, providing a new 3G playing surface and transforming the pavilion.

"The area's cricket players will also benefit from the use of these changing facilities.

"The intention is to begin restoration works at Glasgow Green immediately after the Commonwealth Games."
