SCOTS holidaymakers are jetting off to soak up the sun during what is expected to be Glasgow Airport's busiest weekend of the year.

The hub is expecting up to 140,000 travellers to pass through on Saturday and Sunday, with sun-seekers flying off to popular spots such as Turkey, Greece, Florida, the Canary Islands and Spain.

Airport bosses are expecting a year on year increase in the number of people jetting off, demand which has been met by carriers increasing the capacity on some of their most popular routes.

The airport will have extra staff working over the weekend to make sure travellers get away on time by guiding them through check-in and security.

Younger travellers will be able to play in a dedicated 'kidzone', where they can a bouncy castle, face painting, sand sculpting and treasure hunt games.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "There is always a real sense of excitement throughout the airport at this time of year with many people heading off for their annual summer holiday.

"We are anticipating more passengers than the same period last year and airlines have responded by adding extra capacity on some routes.

"It's important to us that everyone's journey through the airport is an enjoyable one and the entertainment, along with additional staff, will hopefully ensure our passengers' holidays get off to the best possible start."

British Airways have also just announced that they will be increasing the number of daily flights to Scotland from a London airport.

The carrier will introduce two new daily flights from London City to Glasgow, as well as one flight to Edinburgh.

The airline, which currently operates eight return flights to Glasgow, will now fly up to a total of 21 times a day between the city airport and other UK destinations.

Luke Hayhoe, British Airways' commercial general manager at London City, said: "We are constantly looking at how we can improve our schedule and the best ways to use our new aircraft.

"We are now able to add to our existing network to Scotland with extra flights on the popular Glasgow and Edinburgh routes."
