SCOTLAND has only a "modest amount" of shale gas and oil, according to a new study.

The British Geological Survey estimates there are 80 trillion cubic feet of shale gas in central Scotland and six billion barrels of shale oil.

UK Energy Minister Michael Fallon said shale gas and oil reserves in central Scotland would not provide "an energy bonanza".

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing, above, said he would continue to consider fracking applications "on their merits".
