DOZENS of extra jobs have been created at a Glasgow shopping mall by Britain's biggest supermarket chain as part of a multi-million pound store revamp.

The Tesco Extra at Silverburn has undergone a £5.2 million makeover and will fully re-open next week after recruiting almost 100 new staff.

The major investment by the supermarket chain paves the way for the launch next year of a £20m extension at the South Side mall, which includes nine new restaurants and a 14-screen cinema.

Tesco is an anchor tenant at the shopping centre in Pollok, which opened seven years ago at a cost of £350m. Silverburn attracts around 14m shoppers each year and supermarket bosses decided it was time to remodel their existing store.

The big money makeover has led to the introduction of a new, family friendly Giraffe restaurant, a fresh pizza counter and a Food-to-Go department offering takeaway meals.

There will be a new Nutri Centre, offering a range of vitamins, minerals and health foods, as well as a Beauty World department which features make up counters, a nail bar, and eyebrow threading and teeth whitening services. The redesign also includes a community room for public use.

The store has remained open while a team of workers spearheaded the upgrade, which has led to the creation of 98 new jobs, bringing the workforce to a total of 524.

The new look Tesco Extra relaunches on Monday.

Store manager Mark Whittet said: "We're thrilled to be able to offer all of these new departments and ranges to our customers, especially the community room, which will be a great asset for the the community.

"We'd like to thank all of our customers for their patience and co-operation over the last few months while the work has been taking place and I hope they enjoy all of the changes."

The jobs boost and multi-million pound spend have been welcomed by the mall's general manager, David Pierotti, and comes after the supermarket giant chose Silverburn to launch its first Tesco Pit Stop, following a successful pilot in Milton Keynes.

Shoppers can arrrange to have new tyres fitted to their cars while visiting the store, if they place an order with online tyre retailer Blackcircles, in a new business venture being rolled out across the country.

Mr Pierotti welcomed the upgrade.

He said: "It's great to see Tesco developing alongside the mall. Just this week the 'Tesco Pit Stop' was launched, making Silverburn the only Scottish location to offer this unique service.

He added: "Many of our customers are telling us they are excited about the developments."
