GEOGRAPHY teacher Kris Robertson is facing a double challenge this summer.

As well as competing in the Commonwealth Games, he reckons he is facing a tougher challenge with Glasgow teenagers.

Kris will take part in a gruelling expedition with 15 Glasgow youngsters after running for Team Scotland this summer.

The 26-year-old, who teaches at Whitehill Secondary School in Dennistoun, will be taking the group of teenagers to Malawi for a World Challenge.

Testing their endurance, teamwork and stamina, the two-week trip will see them climbing mountains and fending for themselves.

The group, many of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds, will get the chance to cook all their own meals, build tents and challenge their bodies on long treks.

Kris said: "Many of these kids might not have been abroad before. It will be a real challenge and they will be doing everything on their own."

Along with the expeditions, the group are planning to help a Malawi school to introduce sports into their curriculum, something which is fairly uncommon in the Southeast African country.

"In schools in Malawi, they don't do P.E. really, so we're teaching kids different games and teaching teachers how to run a P.E. lesson and how to make their own equipment." explained Kris.

In the meantime the Bishopbriggs man is training for his Commonwealth debut, which will mark the end of his professional running career.

He started competing in pentathlons aged just 15 and was picked to represent Team Scotland two weeks after his first race.

Due to the lack of pentathlon events throughout the year, Kris decided to focus on the 400m event and went "from success to success."

"My biggest successes are winning the World junior bronze medal, a European gold in the 4x4 race, and a few British titles as well" he said.

"Being selected for the Games is fantastic as well, and it finishes off my sporting career.

"Although I'm still young I want to wind down my professional career and start focusing on other things.

"I will still train but not travel about as much."

Competing in front of a home crowd is a dream come true for Kris, who will be watched by his partner Maria, as well as his mum, dad, friends and family.
