A FOOTBALL tournament organised each year by a Glasgow man to raise cash for Cystic Fibrosis patients is being held next month in his memory.

Anders Gibson organised the CF Sevens tournament every year at Firhill Complex, raising thousands for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

He had already scheduled this year's event, in the weeks before his death on May 19.

His family and friends have rallied round to organise the 16-team tournament this year on August 10, which is raising cash for the Butterfly Trust, which provides support to people suffering from the lung condition.

Anders died days after getting a double lung transplant, after four near misses for the surgery.

By the time the 35-year-old got the call to say a match had been found his health had deteriorated drastically.

Anders, who lived in the city's West End, was an active supporter of the Evening Times' Opt for Life campaign, which is calling for Scotland to switch to an opt-out transplant system in Scotland to help save more lives.

He also wrote a moving article about the agony of waiting for a transplant call.

Anders' dad Hervey, who lives in Pollokshields, said: "It's hard work putting it together without Anders' persistence and charm, but we'll make it."

Hundreds of people attended a memorial service for Anders at Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church.

Hervey said: "The memorial went very well, a real celebration of Ander's life, in many ways a party with serious bits.

"About 350 people came, and quite a few from away stayed on in Glasgow for the weekend."

The tournament will also include family friendly activities and a raffle.

All money raised will go to the Butterfly Trust, which provides emotional support and counselling, financial help, transport to hospital appointments and massage therapy in hospital.

There are still places available for teams to take part in the event. For more information e-mail mail@team glasgow.net
