IT is a hattrick for Glasgow's school pupils as exam results improve across the board for the third year running.

Thousands of youngsters across the city were celebrating their exam results as envelopes arrived on doorsteps this morning.

Glasgow City Council figures show the number of young people achieving one or more Advanced Higher in Glasgow has more than doubled in the last seven years.

At Higher level the number of young people passing three or more or five or more Highers by the end of S6 up by around 3%.

Councillor Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People, said: "Hot on the heels of Team Scotland's success - Glasgow's young people will be celebrating today with more of our pupils than ever before gaining awards in SQA exams.

"The number of young people achieving one or more Advanced Higher in Glasgow has more than doubled in the last seven years - from 5% in 2007 to an amazing 11.5% in 2014.

"This is down to our innovative partnerships and widening access programmes including the hub at Glasgow Caledonian University.

"Glasgow's exam success is at an all time high and our schools have been awarded a fantastic report card today with exam results up across the majority of indicators."

Glasgow's pupils were among 145,000 across Scotland who sat Nationals, Highers and Advanced Highers this year.

The new National 2, National 3, National 4 and National 5 are designed to test a wider range of relevant skills and to prepare young people better for the modern workplace.

No matter what the results, Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is urging people to call the Exam Results Helpline on 0808 100 8000. SDS's Operations Director Danny Logue said: "People may have done better than they anticipated or not achieved the results they hoped for, but the message is that there are options and they, and their parents, shouldn't panic."

He added: "The first step is to call the helpline and discuss all of the options that are available and there are lots of options open to them."

Advisers will also be on hand for a number of Twitter Q&As @mywowscotland to help young people access information and support. SDS's Facebook page will feature answers to common problems, links to other bodies including SQA, UCAS, SAAS and Young Scot and help on making sure the next move is a good one.

There is also post-results information for young people and their parents on SDS's My World of Work website www.myworld ofwork.co.uk

The helpline, now in its 22nd year, will be open from 8am until 8pm on August 5 and 6 and from 9am until 5pm until August 13.

Mr Curren added: "This is an outstanding achievement and proves we are raising the attainment and aspirations and improving the life chances of Glasgow's young people.

"Pupils and teachers should be very proud of themselves today for their hard work, determination and commitment has paid off and I'm delighted."
