MORE than 1000 motorists were hit with fines for parking without permits during the Games.

The £60 penalties were given to 1124 drivers who did not have residential parking permits, including 842 around Hampden and 126 around Scotstoun.

Figures showed 156 cars near the lawnbowls centre at Kelvingrove were also spotted without the special passes issued to residents before the sporting extravaganza.

The council employed 452 parking attendants to patrol areas near the venues to target rogue vehicles, with more than half being stationed around Hampden.

During the road race and marathon events, 61 illegally parked cars parked were lifted off the roads.

At the Merchant City Festival, seven cars were removed and, during the cycling time trials, three more vehicles were uplifted.

A council spokesman said: "The well publicised travel strategy of Glasgow 2014 was to use public transport.

"The permits were in place to protect residents during the Games.

"Penalties were issued to drivers who chose to ignore parking restrictions - and inconvenience residents - in permit only areas."
