TENS of thousands of people had fun in the sun at Pollok Park's annual family gathering.

For the first time the Highland Cattle Show was held alongside the fun day - and attracted a record 37,000 visitors.

More than 100 Highland 'coos' were primed and prepped to look their best as they competed across 12 classes.

Top breeders from across the UK arrived in the park to show off their best cattle.

As we reported in the Evening Times on Saturday, the animals are washed and blow dried before their moment in the spotlight to make sure they look their best for the judges.

Glasgow City Council keeps a herd of around 70 Highland cows and calves, including Russell, the bull who won fourth place this year at the Royal Highland Show.

Elsewhere in the park, in the South Side of the city, bumper crowds enjoyed live music, children's entertainment, a dance arena and food stalls.

There was even a livestock zone, filled with different animals for all generations to enjoy.

Some park-goers even took a dip in the White Cart Water to make the most of the warm and dry weather.

The family fun day is in its 36th year. Last year it attracted 35,000 people.

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said park bosses were delighted to welcome so many visitors.

She said: "It was a fantastic day and we were very happy to see such a big turnout.

"Combining the family fun day with the highland cattle show meant there was even more for families and friends to see and do.

"There was something for everyone to enjoy.

"A lot of hard work has gone into organising the cattle show, and the fun day, which celebrated its 36th year at the weekend.

"We can't wait for next year's event."
