FILM buffs can fly from Glasgow and visit desert locations where scenes have been shot for the George Lucas blockbuster Star Wars movies.

Jet2 is introducing its first flights to Tunisia next summer, where holidaymakers can book desert safaris, explore archaeological sites and go camel trekking.

The African republic is already served by holiday rivals Thomson and Thomas Cook.

But Jet2 bosses are literally planning a sizzling summer next year after seeing customer numbers in Glasgow soar by a third in the last 12 months.

They plan more destinations and today announced plans to fly holidaymakers direct to the Tunisian town of Enfidha with easy access to resorts such as Yase- mine Hammamet, Port El Kantaoui and Sousse.

Steve Heapy is hoping the North African country will prove a big hit with sun-worshipers.

The boss of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: "We are thrilled to announce yet more exciting news with the launch of Tunisia. The addition of this new hotspot means people living in Glasgow can enjoy travelling even further afield.

"Tunisia is a fantastic addition to our services, and I am confident that it will be an extremely popular destination."

Jet2 introduced a fifth dedicated plane for Glasgow this summer and plan another next year when the airline expects to handle 350,000 passengers.

Next summer also sees Jet2 introducing flights and package holidays to four other new destinations - the Turkish city of Antalya, Larnaca in Cyprus, the Mediterranean island of Malta and the Czech capital of Prague.

Glasgow Airport commercial director Francois Bourienne said: "We are their largest Scottish base and are delighted they have continued what has been a rapid expansion with news of this direct service to Tunisia."
