UNEMPLOYED Barry Haetzman is among those who will benefit as more than 60,000 items used by Commonwealth Games athletes are being given away free to vulnerable people who need help to furnish their home.

He's been given furniture from the Athletes Village to kit out a spare bedroom so that his two young children can stay with him.

Barry, from Shettleston, hit hard times when the family broke up and being unemployed meant he couldn't afford to furnish the spare bedroom so that his schoolboy son and young daughter could stay overnight.

The GHA tenant is one of the first to benefit from the free giveaway. He's been given beds, wardrobes, bedside cabinets and sofas so that his kids can stay weekends.

The 39-year-old said: "The furniture has really helped me, especially for when the kids come to visit. I'm happy if the kids are happy.

"It would have been very hard to furnish the flat without this help.

"You have to budget for electricity, gas and food. It all adds up. There are people out there who don't have anything at all. It will really help them out."

Tenants of Cube and Loretto Housing Association are also to get furniture, while more than 13,500 items are being given to 35 registered social landlords in and around Glasgow.
