GYMNASTS and their coaches are beaming with pride after landing a series of top sports industry accolades.

City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club is continuing its winning way with more gongs after its stars shone in the Commonwealth Games.

Lead artistic coach, Marius Gherman struck gold this week when the Glasgow Sports Council named him Performance Coach of the Year.

It was a special moment for the Romanian-born coach, who won bronze in the 1992 Olympic Games for his performance on the horizontal bar.

And women's lead artistic coach, Sandra Walsh, is also set to shine for the city club when she is formally announced next week as sportscotland's Development Coach of the Year.

The double triumph comes hard on the heels of the success of club members Adam Cox and Laim Davies, who helped Team Scotland to strike silver in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

There were more celebrations this week when the club's disability gymnastics squad was shortlisted for Team of the Year, while women's artisic coach Kirsty Simme was also shortlisted for the title of top Technical Official.

Angela Turner, disability gymnastics lead coach at the club, said: "I am incredibly proud of our Sports Council shortlist spot and I am thrilled for everyone linked to the club who has done so well.

"Being recognised in this way is brilliant for our gymnasts and the sport in general. It is a wonderful platform to create and nurture the feel good factor."

Club head coach Rod Smith was honoured last month when he received a Nik Stuart Honorary Life Member Award in recognition of his distinguished service to British gymnastics.

Rod said: "It has been a tremendous year for thew club, we have achieved great success at various levels.

"This recognition is down to the determination and commitment of both our gymnasts and coaches.

"To secure three awards and two nominations from such important sporting institutions is a terrific achievement for our gymnasts, coaches and the club as a whole."

And he added: "On a personal note, I couldn't be more proud to accept the coveted Nik Stuart Honorary Life Member Award."

The club was established in 1985 and is based at Bellahouston Leisure Cenre.

It aims to prepare gymnasts for a career in training and competition. There are almost 200 members, of which nine have trained to a professional standard.
