A SCOT has placed a bet of £50,000 on Andy Murray to win Wimbledon.

The wager on Murray - the competition's 5/2 second favourite, behind Novak Djokovic - would net a £175,000 return, including the stake.

Ladbrokes believes it the largest tennis bet ever placed in Scotland.

The British number one is due to get his campaign under way against Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: "Our Murray fan in Aberdeen has given his hero the ultimate vote of confidence with this record-breaking bet."

Murray ended Britain's 77-year wait for a men's singles champion in 2013 when he beat Djokovic in the final.

Security was stepped up for the start of Wimbledon yesterday amid heightened fears of a terror attack, as the first British player stormed into the second round of this year's championships.

Liam Broady was the first Briton through to the second round after coming from two sets down to beat Australian Marinko Matosevic.

Afterwards, the 21-year-old wildcard, from Stockport, received a message of support from Andy Murray who tweeted: "Well done @liambroady. Big comeback win."

The tennis action on Centre Court kicked off with defending champion Novak Djokovic sailing through his first round match.

The Scot has been handed a tough draw as third seed, and may have to overcome former champions Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Djokovic if he is to achieve glory.

The British Association of Tennis Supporters have insisted Murray will have the full support of the Wimbledon crowd despite having voiced his support for Scottish independence in last year's referendum.

Djokovic's first round match was briefly interrupted when a blue tit flew on to Centre Court.

Afterwards, the Twitter page of Rufus the hawk, who is tasked with scarring off pigeons at the All England Club, tweeted: "My domain is pigeons. I think he's just after my autograph."

One Direction star Niall Horan was among the crowd today as up to 40,000 spectators enjoyed glorious sunshine, with temperatures expected to reach 26C.
