Wimbledon's Centre Court was evacuated after the close of play on Wednesday evening.

An announcement was made over the public address system shortly after 9pm requesting that anyone remaining inside the building, where play had recently ended for the day, should immediately leave.

The announcement interrupted a Serena Williams press conference in the Millennium Building media centre, adjacent to Centre Court. That was allowed to continue, however.

As alarms rang out, a further announcement was made requesting that anyone on the tea lawn between Gates Four and Five should also evacuate.

There was no indication of smoke or flames from inside Centre Court although fire engines rapidly arrived at the All England Club.

A tweet from London Fire Brigade said it had been called to the scene due to a small fire which had been dealt with and was under control.

"We have been called to a small fire at £Wimbledon2015 a plant room at the stadium is alight and the stadium as been evacuated," the Fire Brigade said.

A further update 25 minutes later said: "Game set and match. The fire at £Wimbledon2015 tennis club is now under control."

A tournament spokesman said there was a "suspected electrical fault" which may have caused a small fire. Spectators and staff in the vicinity of Centre Court were ordered to leave the grounds.

There had been a much earlier reported incident on Court One which tournament officials said was a drill. Ball boys and ball girls waited outside the gates as darkness fell.

Media were allowed to stay in the grounds, in the confines of the press centre.
