A MAN who has been using his neighbour's shower for the last seven months will soon be able to wash in his own home thanks to the Evening Times.

As we reported earlier this week, David Dempsie was unable to use his own bathroom as his wheelchair couldn't fit into it.

The 54-year-old couldn't climb into his bath either and had to use a neighbour's adapted shower to wash.

He couldn't leave his Parkhouse flat without help from friends, family or neighbours as he couldn't get down the stairs at the front of his house.

The seven-month wait was taking its toll on the father-of-five, who had received support from both his GP and Occupational therapist to pursue the renovations.

After we highlighted David's story, bosses at north Glasgow housing association NG Homes vowed to begin work in his home within a week.

Contractors will start work on making his bathroom accessible and widening the doors in his one bedroom flat on July 6.

David said: "It will make a huge difference to my life and it's thanks to the Evening Times that this has happened.

"The bathroom is really the priority for me as it means I can shower and wash as and when I want, and when suits me.

"I don't have to rely on someone else and it will give me a bit more independence.

"It was really good of my neighbour to let me use his but it will be much easier when I'm able to use my own bathroom.

"The doors being widened will also mean I can move about my flat much more easily and hopefully when the ramp is put in that will make my life much better."

David, who suffers an array of medical conditions, contracted meningitis and septicaemia three years ago and now relies on his wheelchair to get around.

Planning permission has been submitted for a ramp to be fitted outside his flat, meaning he will be able to come and go as he pleases without relying on help from friends and family.

A spokesperson for NG homes said: “Following receipt of the Occupational Therapist’s report on 18 May 2015, a number of visits were made to Mr Dempsie’s home due to the extent of the work required. "We have kept in regular contact with Mr Dempsie throughout this time and we have now arranged for door alterations and a shower to be installed on 6 July 2015.

"Other structural work requires further investigation and planning permission.”
