IT is nearly the one year anniversary of the best ever Commonwealth Games - and Glasgow has special plans to celebrate.

To mark the occasion, Glasgow Life will be hosting a series of free sports days for young people in communities across the city.

The Anniversary Games will take place in five of the venues used during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, with a further six held in local sports centres in other parts of the city.

A host of free events will give young people the chance to try out Commonwealth Games sports.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “It is incredible to think that it is almost one year since we welcomed the world to Glasgow for what was the best ever Commonwealth Games.

“Glasgow’s Games were never going to be about just 11 days of world-class sport. We were determined to use them to inspire the next generation of sports stars and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. That is already proving to be the case with record numbers of young people involved in sport.

“And that is why we are preparing to celebrate the anniversary of the Commonwealth Games by hosting series of free sports days for young people across the city. Who knows the medal winners of the future might take their first steps to sporting stardom at Glasgow’s Anniversary Games.”

The first sports day will be held at the Glasgow Club Crownpoint – the new home of the running track used at Hampden Park during the Commonwealth Games – with others taking place at the £113million Emirates Arena, Tollcross International Swimming Centre and the Glasgow Club Scotstoun.

Glasgow Green Hockey Centre, Kelvingrove Tennis and Lawn Bowls and Glasgow Club centres including Easterhouse, Springburn, Bellahouston, Donald Dewar and Castlemilk will also hold fun days for the family.

Activities available across the 11 days include athletics, badminton, rugby, table tennis, hockey, squash and track cycling taster sessions at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

Other sports which weren’t part of the Commonwealth Games - including football, tennis and water polo - are included at some sites.

The Anniversary Games form part of Glasgow City Council’s commitment to ensuring that the Commonwealth Games leave a lasting legacy.

They take place at a time when sports participation levels in Glasgow stand at an all-time high, with 17,000 young people in Glasgow now a registered member of a sports club – a 288% increase since 2009.
