A GLASGOW MSP has written an urgent letter to the national care watchdog calling for an investigation into care provider Cordia.

Bob Doris contacted the Care Inspectorate after we reported a string of incidents involving neglect of vulnerable clients and chaos at the care provider's headquarters last week.

The SNP MSP wrote to the organisation, which acts as a watchdog for care services across Scotland, calling for them to immediately investigate the situation.

The letter, addressed to the Chief Executive of the organisation, states: " I am deeply concerned that this new shift pattern is not fit for purpose and may indeed lead to an inferior or reduced level of service

"Indeed [the union] Unison has raised concerns about the increase in hours worked, with staff required to work a seven hour-week another factor that is also likely to impact the quality of care.

"I ask that you urgently investigate this matter."

He also cited concerns about bullying of staff at the organisation and said it showed "scant regard for the continuity of care for vulnerable constituents of mine, as well as demoralise an essential workforce."

The MSP contacted Cordia in April and May regarding the changes as he had been contacted by his concerned constituents, who feared losing their regular carers.

Staff and clients who have contacted The Evening Times have told of their horror at losing their regular clients or carers.

Some clients have been left neglected by the care provider after staff failed to turn up to their home.

An investigation has been launched by Cordia after two severely disabled women were left for more than 10 hours without care in Drumchapel on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said: “This is a very distressing case and no-one should have to experience such poor-quality and alarming care. Our most recent inspection of the Cordia care at home service in the north west of Glasgow found that the quality of care was no better than adequate, and we made a number of requirements and recommendations for improvement. We will be following these up at an unannounced inspection.

“It is vital that changes in management arrangements do not impact negatively on people receiving care.

"We have the power to investigate complaints about care services and urge anyone with concerns to contact us on 0345 6009527.”
