CHANGES will be made to train services to get golf fans from Glasgow to the The Open championship.

ScotRail is warning passengers can expected busier trains between Sunday July 12 and Sunday July 19 while the event is being held at St Andrews.

To ensure spectators can attend, the rail operator is running an altered service between July 15 to 19 so more trains call at Leuchars, the closest station to the event.

At present, work is being carried out at Winchburgh tunnel on the Glasgow to Edinburgh line.

As a result, passengers travelling from Glasgow are encouraged to change at Dundee for a train to Leuchars.

Extra carriages are being added to services between Glasgow Queen Street and Aberdeen, meaning trains will be too long for platforms at Portlethen, Carnoustie, Broughty Ferry and Springfield and as a result, will not be able to call there. Buses will run instead to allow connections with train services.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: “We want to give our customers a heads up about the alterations and that some trains will be busier with golf fans. "Passengers are encouraged to check our website or the ScotRail app to see if their service is affected.”

Queuing systems will be in place at key stations for spectators and extra staff will be on hand to assist customers.
